A garage is a single skin of masonry, which is to say almost no wall at all. New windows and a door went in first, and then the insulation had to be built up on the inside.
Natural hempcrete blocks were laid against the existing wall, course by course, and detailed around the new door frame. Breathable lime plaster went over them and was painted normally. What was a garage is now a room with a wall that insulates and still handles moisture.

A garage, an outhouse or a side return can all become proper rooms. The wall is usually the thing that decides how warm they end up.
