Renovation, deep retrofit and extensions

An old building, future-proofed

Structural alterations, conversions, steelwork, heating systems, rewiring, plastering, kitchens and bathrooms: we can take it all on. But every renovation we do has a firm focus on energy efficiency, and none of them leaves our hands without a high level of insulation and airtightness, carefully thought through and properly done.

So if you're after a light refresh, we're probably not the right people. If you'd like the building to come out warm, efficient and ready for the decades ahead, we'd be very glad to hear from you.

“We completely renovated our property to include new electrics, plumbing, flooring, tiling, plastering, replacement doors and windows, insulation, paving, and decking. The process was project managed professionally from start to finish and the work was completed to a very high standard. The attention to detail and consultative way they approached the works was impressive and I cannot recommend Adam and his team highly enough.”

The details that decide how a renovation turns out

A surface renovation is usually a straightforward series of jobs, completed in order and finished with care. It's simple work that needs to be done well. A deep renovation is different.

Once insulation and airtightness are introduced into the structure itself, that way of working stops being enough. What decides how it turns out is a large number of small places where the elements meet and join. An intermediate floor cutting across the wall insulation and breaking its continuity. Service runs passing through the airtightness layer. A socket box or a window sill that has to sit somewhere without leaving a thermal gap.

Every one of those needs attention first, then a plan, then careful work on the day. Without that, you'll have paid a premium price for a warm house but only ended up with a decorated one.

“Very professional and knowledgeable. The site was left immaculate every evening. The job was completed quickly and any hitches along the way were solved quickly by Adam without any drama! Our house looks amazing, and is noticeably warmer. Many thanks.”

How a renovation gets started

  1. The drawingsOn a bigger job we start from your architect's drawings. On a smaller one we can usually skip this step.
  2. A visitWe come and look at the building with you and talk through the details.
  3. An estimateWe come back to you with an idea of what it's likely to cost.
  4. A fixed-price quoteIf the estimate works for you, we work out a fixed price and send you a detailed quote.
  5. Booking the work inOnce the quote is accepted and signed, we schedule the works.

Thinking of an extension?

If you'd like to add to the building, and do it in a sustainable and energy-efficient way, we'd be glad to help. We build extensions in:

  • Timber frame, insulated with blown-in cellulose
  • Porotherm clay blocks
  • JUWÖ SmartWall clay block systems
  • Hempcrete blocks

What we won't build is a cavity wall filled with PIR board. Sorry!

“Adam and his team have just finished building our kitchen extension. We chose Eco Renovations because they had carried out work in our cellar and had therefore, first hand experience of Adam's knowledge and his workforce's work ethics. The extension has been built to a very high standard, purely because his workforce are also very knowledgable and take pride in their work. It's been a harsh winter, however, Adam and his team set up tarpaulin so they could continue to work whatever the weather – turning up everyday and working long hours, when necessary, in order to get weekly targets completed. (Adam kept us informed every step of the build). We had some challenges along the way. (we live in a very old building). Adam came up with answers himself, as well as discussing things with his team in order to overcome these problems. Most importantly, Adam always made us feel that all challenges can be overcome and we were not to worry. This made it a less stressful experience for us. We would definitely recommend Eco Renovations.”

Questions people ask

Do we have to move out?
Not necessarily. Plenty of our whole-house jobs are done room by room with the family still in the building. An empty house is quicker and usually cheaper, so it's worth weighing up, but it isn't a condition.
How long does a whole house take?
It depends entirely on the size and what's being done, so we'd need to see it first. We'll give you a programme with the specification, and we'd rather it was one we can keep to.
Can it be done in stages over a few years?
Yes, and for a lot of people that's the sensible way. We'll suggest an order that means nothing done early has to be undone later.
Do you work with our architect?
Often. We're happy to price from someone else's drawings and specification.

Shall we come and have a look?

If you have an interesting project, tell us about it. We'd be glad to arrange a time to come and look around the building and go through the details with you.
